MGM Resorts International Reveals Data Breach Details and Response

MGM Resorts International recently disclosed the extent of a data breach that occurred last month, shedding light on the information that hackers were able to access. However, the company did not reveal the exact number of individuals affected by the breach.

The hack, which forced MGM to shut down systems at several of its hotels and casinos, resulted in the theft of customer data, including names, contact information, date of birth, and driver’s license numbers. Additionally, a “limited number” of customers had their social security numbers, passport numbers, or both compromised.

While MGM did not provide specifics regarding the number of affected individuals, the company’s filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission indicated that the stolen data pertains to customers who engaged with the company before March 2019.

However, MGM offered some reassurance, stating that it does not believe passwords, bank account numbers, or card details were stolen. The company emphasized its commitment to customer security and announced its intention to notify affected individuals via email. Furthermore, MGM will provide free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to those affected.

The company’s domestic operations have returned to normal, with almost all guest-facing systems restored. MGM expects full restoration of all systems in the coming days. It is estimated that the incident resulted in expenses amounting to under $10 million for technology consulting services, legal fees, and other third-party advisors. However, the total financial impact is projected to reach approximately $100 million.

If you suspect that your information may have been compromised, MGM has established a dedicated call center and a webpage with additional information to assist affected individuals.
