The Notorious Crypto Couple Reaches Plea Agreement in Bitfinex Hack Case

The infamous crypto couple accused of attempting to launder billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin (BTC) from the 2016 Bitfinex hack has reached a plea agreement. Court records indicate that Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan have closed their case and reached an agreement with prosecutors, although the details of the plea deal have not been made public.

The couple allegedly laundered Bitcoin stolen from Bitfinex by utilizing various strategies to obscure their digital paper trail. This involved sending the stolen crypto to darknet markets, utilizing fake identities, and using US-based business accounts to legitimize their banking activities.

In February 2022, the US Department of Justice seized 119,754 BTC valued at $3.6 billion from Lichtenstein and Morgan. Heather Morgan, in addition to her involvement in the crypto laundering case, has a diverse background. She is a former Forbes columnist, chief executive of a copywriting firm, and a YouTube rapper known as “Razzlekhan.” It has also been reported that a television limited series titled “Razzlekhan: The Infamous Crocodile of Wall Street” is currently in development at Hulu.

While the plea agreement between the crypto couple and prosecutors has been reached, further information about the case is expected to be revealed during their scheduled plea hearing on August 3rd.
