Gillett High School Band Working to Raise $20,000 for New Uniforms

For most, a new year either means new changes or taking on new projects. For some in Gillett, a new project has been adopted, and that is to raise funds for the Gillett High School Band to purchase new band uniforms.

The plan of the band is to raise $20,000 for 75 band uniforms @ $250.00 each. There are currently 55 students in the Gillett High School band, and the extra sets will accommodate any new band students or if a current band member needs a different uniform. Hats are not included in that cost because they will not be purchased: the hats from the old uniforms are still able to be used with the new uniforms. The prior band director had not kept proper track of the uniforms, so there are only a few miscellaneous pieces of the previous outfits left at the school.

At the Gillett Business Association meeting December 12, 2018, High School Band Director Jake Kulba along with Amy Lemens and Jenny Myrick spoke to GBA Members about the mission to raise money for the uniforms. At this time, the committee has a Punchboard set up at Klaus Lake Bar to help raise funds. The cost is $3.00 per punch, and $5,000 worth of prizes were donated. Half of the punch board proceeds will go to the band, and the other half will go to Klaus Lake Bar. For a sample of future fundraising events, a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast is tentatively planned for March 17, 2019, a Harvest Festival is planned for September 2019, and car washes are planned for multiple dates in 2019. We will have details available for all events on Facebook and throughout Gillett as soon as the plans are set!!

There is a saying that many hands make little work. I, too, am on this committee, and I honestly believe that this goal can be reached, but we need more hands to make that happen—that’s where you can come in!! The next meeting for this committee is being held at 4pm Sunday February 10th at Gillett Handiworks, 124 East Main Street in Gillett. Please consider helping out, and join us in making a difference!
