My Take on the 2019 Roy Hubbard Memorial Truck Show

3 min read

Gillett hosted a truck show for the very first time last weekend-a show that was created in memory of lifelong Gillett resident Roy Hubbard. Roy founded Roy Hubbard Rental Trucking Inc. in the 1930’s and spent 45 years in the trucking business before his death in 1987 at the age of 74. At one point in Hubbard’s trucking career, his company was the sole transporter of Gillett Canning Company’s canned goods. After months of planning (the committee had been meeting since December 2018) I am still riding a bit of a high from seeing the fruit of our labor being enjoyed by those who came to see the 52 trucks that were registered for the event.

The members of the truck show committee are: James Beaton, Josh Arndt, Jenny Neumann, Joe Arndt, Mark Winkler, Mike Lambrecht, and myself. I really have to give much of the credit to Josh, Joe and Mike, since without them the word of the show could not have reached as far as it did. It looked a little scary for the committee on Friday as the rain seemed to go on forever, but we still managed to get in the opening ceremony at 6pm with the presentation of the colors and the singing of the National Anthem. The Boom-Boom Boys also were able to get in their fireworks show after the downpour of rain!

The committee also went out of the way to make sure there were things for EVERYONE. Saturday had a smorgasbord of activity going on, and thanks to the great weather more families were able to enjoy it. Vendors were able to sell their merchandise in the expo hall, and for the kids there was face painting and balloon animals inside as well. Kids got a chance to judge the trucks, and when they voted for their favorite, they put in an entry for a chance to win a bike. The winner of the judging was the truck vehicle “Hound” from “Transformers: Age of Extinction”, which was brought to the show by Oshkosh Truck. For just $10.00 people also had the chance to purchase a shirt that they could tie-dye and bring home! Two bands, Outlaw Junkies and Bad Habitz, entertained the crowds into the evening. At 9pm the trucks lined up to form a parade down Gillett’s Main Street. Sunday the activities quieted down with a blessing of the trucks and a non-denominational service in the expo hall, plus a pancake porkie breakfast in the beer tent.

Thanks to the reception the committee came across, we plan to make this show an annual event. So, mark your calendars now! For this show, Father’s Day Weekend is forever set aside for the Roy Hubbard Memorial Truck Show, in 2020 that falls on June 19-21. If you want to take part in keeping this show going, please contact me or any of the committee members listed above. Many hands make little work!
