THERE’S S*** IN OUR WEATHER FORECAST!!

3 min read

No, not that naughty word, but I am talking snow! (Although to be fair some anti-winter folks feel snow falls in that ‘4 Letter Word’ Category!) After last night’s layer of snow and looking at two weather sources- Fox 11 and Weather Underground- it is looking like our Halloween will be a snowy one for the first time in many years. I thought this might be an ideal time to refresh the memory of my readers as to what The City of Gillett has in place for winter protocol.

Winter Parking Regulations

According to cityofgillett.com, it is unlawful to park on any city street between the hours of 2:00 A.M. and 6:00 A.M. November 1st through April 1st. This ordinance was enacted to allow the Street Department to plow unobstructed. Violators of this ordinance are ticketed by the Gillett Police Department and the vehicles may be towed at owner’s expense. It is also unlawful to cross plow snow or deposit snow in any city street, and action would once again be taken against anyone who does that.

Snow Removal

The City of Gillett’s website also has information on the snow removal ordinance.

First, it is the responsibility of the owner/occupant of any store buildings, lot or part of a lot to remove all snow/ice from the sidewalk bordering such premises within 24 hours of a snow or ice storm ending. When ice is formed, ashes, sawdust, salt or sand can be sprinkled on the sidewalk to make the surface safer for walking.

Second, all sidewalks that have not been cleaned/sprinkled in the 24-hour period will be cleaned by city employees, and the owner of the property will be charged an extra fee to cover the city’s cost of removing the snow or ice. It is permissible for a person to deposit snow in an alley/street if the person does not have a terrace or adjacent land available for depositing the snow. That snow will be removed by the city crew.

Third, it is prohibited for a person to plow snow from his/her property across any street or alley and deposit it on another person’s property without permission of the person.

Snow Days

If you recall, The Gillett School District did not have to make up snow days in 2018-19 in spite of using a whopping seven of them. The reason for that is the schedule the district implemented after that horrendous April 2018 blizzard we were ‘blessed’ with. After that storm, the district added minutes to the school day to make up for the days we used in 2017-18. The district kept the school day that added length for 2018-19 in case it happened again, which it obviously did. The school informed me that the day length is the same for 2019-20 to accommodate for any potential abundance of snow days. Time will tell if predictions for a repeat of last winter will come to fruition.

They say weathermen are wrong 50% of the time, but did you ever notice that they aren’t wrong when you want them to be? We are Wisconsinites though, we will make it through, and we will have southern folks in awe of how we endure. Now if you will pardon me, I better go get my shovel out of hiding…
