ST Paper Environmental, Health and Safety Manager

The ST Paper EHS Manager leads activities for ST Paper and ST Tissue to ensure alignment with policies/procedures. The EHS Manager is responsible for providing Environmental, Health and Safety leadership and guidance in ensuring that all individuals have ownership of the safety programs, while fostering a safety-conscious atmosphere.

The EHS Manager will provide the direction and oversight necessary to achieve a workplace culture committed to incident-free performance, with industry leading performance as an indicator of progress towards the goal.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide strong leadership for the company in planning, directing and managing the Environmental Health and Safety programs to ensure that everyone is conscious of and in compliance with all applicable legislations.
  • Actively promote Health & Safety; enhance a safety conscious culture and establish a strong Health & Safety relationship with stakeholders.
  • Involved in facilitating employee orientations, administering safe work procedures and practices, and educating on site-specific rules and requirements.
  • Support leaders in the preparation and delivery of Daily Toolbox Talks.
  • Lead employee orientations, inspections, and incident investigations.
  • Coach and mentor department managers, hourly leads and safety committee members in the investigation of incidents to determine root cause and corrective action plans
  • Respond to worker safety concerns.
  • Recommend corrective action where Environmental hazards exist.
  • Verify that managers and workers meet Environmental Health & Safety requirements.
  • Record keeping, data input, tracking, and analysis.
  • Conduct inspection for Environmental compliance as per the State and Federal guidelines
  • Maintain a consistent state of safety and environmental regulatory compliance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Facilitate the permit process and maintain valid permits.
  • Manage/lead beneficial waste reuse & manage the marketing environmental certification(s) processes.
  • Perform basic soil, stream and groundwater sampling.
  • Perform visual air monitoring.
  • Evaluate of waste disposal and recycling programs.
  • Maintain federal and state OSHA, DOT, EPA, DNR, etc. records.
  • Responsibility for customer required certification programs such as SFI, FSC, Green Seal, etc.
  • Develop and present regular, dynamic, and valuable employee safety training. This includes scheduling, coordinating locations, providing proper materials, developing and maintaining proper records of training, etc.
  • Ensure that all required training is regularly completed, documented, and tracked. Provide pro-active training to address trends and incident prevention strategies.
  • Monitor relevant state and local regulatory or other legal developments and brief management on the significance thereof.
  • Manage and oversee an effective subcontractor and vendor safety, contract, and insurance certificate management program.
  • Effectively manage all worker’s compensation claims by ensuring open and consistent communication between employees, medical experts, worker’s compensation insurance, ST Paper management, and Corporate Risk Management.
  • Maintain OSHA log; and participate in facility activities working closely with Human Resources.
  • Performs Job Safety Analysis and implement procedures to support employee safety.
  • Develop and maintain effective written safety plans.
  • Maintain liaison with appropriate regulatory agencies.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • BS in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 5-7 years' experience in Health, Safety, and Environment management in a manufacturing operation, and/or construction.
  • Thorough understanding of Root Cause Analysis, Investigation Techniques, Environmental Compliance (groundwater & permitting systems etc.).
  • Ability to find innovative solutions as they apply to Health, Safety & Environment for the organization as a whole.
  • Communicate, enter data and maintain data systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Solid technical experience in identifying, evaluating and controlling environmental hazards in the workplace.
  • Teamwork is critical to the success of this position.
  • Solid leadership, organizational, communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong sound judgment, problem-solving and analytical thinking.
  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Ability to travel.
