Chandigarh Municipal Corporation to Begin Sealing Drive for Property Tax Defaulters

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has announced that it will be starting a sealing drive to address property tax defaulters in the city. This decision comes after a review meeting held by MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra to assess the progress and issues of the property tax branch. Discussions during the meeting focused on the recovery of pending taxes and the number of notices that have been sent out.

According to sources, there are still many defaulters who have been evading their property tax payments. As a result, the MC plans to send out additional notices to these defaulters to ensure compliance. If payment is further delayed, the properties of the defaulters may be sealed. It has been discovered that major property tax defaulters include Panjab University and the Chandigarh administration. Documentation related to these defaulters’ files will be prepared in order to send notices in the coming days.

The MC had previously provided a two-month rebate period, during April and May, for taxpayers to take advantage of the rebate facility. During this period, a 20% rebate was offered on residential properties while a 10% rebate was provided for commercial properties.

By starting the sealing drive, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation aims to enforce compliance with property tax payments and ensure a consistent revenue stream for the city. This initiative will not only hold defaulters accountable, but also incentivize timely payment of property taxes, benefiting the overall financial stability of the municipal corporation.
