In a departure from tradition, several major supermarkets and shops have announced their decision to keep their doors closed on Boxing Day this year. While it was once common for stores in the UK to reopen for the post-Christmas sales on December 26th, this trend has changed in recent years. The decision to remain closed on Boxing Day allows staff members to enjoy a well-deserved break and spend time with their loved ones after the busy holiday period.
One of the supermarkets leading the way in this new trend is Aldi. They have announced that they will be closed for two consecutive days during the festive season – Christmas Day and Boxing Day – as a gesture of gratitude to their hardworking staff. Most Aldi stores will resume their usual opening hours from December 27th, with reduced hours of operation from 8am to 8pm.
Iceland and The Food Warehouse are also joining the list of stores that will remain closed on December 26th. The supermarket’s CEO, Richard Walker, confirmed this decision, emphasizing the importance of giving employees a rest after a challenging year. In Scotland, the majority of Iceland and Food Warehouse stores will reopen on December 27th, operating from around 9am to 7pm.
Other retailers that have chosen to keep their doors closed on Boxing Day include M&S, Waitrose, Home Bargains, Poundland, The Range, Wilko, and Wickes. These stores will reopen on December 27th or resume their normal operating hours, allowing customers to continue their post-Christmas shopping.
This change in tradition reflects a growing emphasis on work-life balance and the recognition of the dedication and effort put in by retail staff throughout the year. By providing them with an extended break, these retailers are demonstrating their appreciation and consideration for their employees’ well-being.
Although some may miss the hustle and bustle of Boxing Day sales, this new approach allows everyone to take some time to relax, recharge, and enjoy the holiday season with their families and loved ones.
