Niger’s new military junta has reportedly reached out to the Russian mercenary group Wagner for assistance. This request comes as the group faces a deadline to release the country’s ousted president or face potential military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The coup leader, General Salifou Mody, made the request during a visit to Mali, according to journalist Wassim Nasr and other sources. They suggest that the junta believes Wagner’s involvement will provide them with the necessary support to maintain their hold on power. It is understood that Wagner is considering the request.
The Western military officials have also heard reports of the junta seeking assistance from Wagner. However, they cannot comment publicly due to the sensitivity of the situation.
ECOWAS has set a deadline for the junta to release and reinstate the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum. In response, defence chiefs from the regional group have finalized an intervention plan and have called on their militaries to prepare necessary resources.
France’s foreign affairs minister, Catherine Colonna, has deemed ECOWAS’ threat of intervention as credible. She stressed the importance of the junta returning power and heeding the demands of both regional countries and the international community.
Niger has been a crucial ally in the fight against terrorism in West Africa. However, the region has seen its fair share of coups in recent years, making Niger’s stability crucial for the West.
