Retiree Mike Kornell Finds Adventure and Fulfillment in Outdoor Activities

Mike Kornell, a former Royal Bank of Canada employee, discovered a new zest for life after being transferred from Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie in 2004. Now retired in his early 60s, Kornell has fully embraced the outdoor offerings of the area and has become an avid enthusiast of various activities such as bicycling, canoeing, kayaking, and cross-country skiing.

One of Kornell’s favorite pastimes is sea kayaking on Lake Superior. With his wife Denise and a couple of friends, he embarks on overnight trips or week-long excursions, camping on the beaches and immersing himself in the natural beauty and tranquility of the waves and the outdoors.

Furthermore, Kornell takes great pleasure in backcountry canoeing. Armed with a lightweight canoe, he explores Algonquin Park and Killarney Park, where he can experience solitude and hear the distant howling of wolves at night.

Kornell’s love for outdoor sports extends beyond Canada. He has embarked on the renowned Land’s End to John o’ Groats (LEJOG) Cycle Route in the United Kingdom, cycling from the southwestern tip of England to the northeastern tip of Scotland. Additionally, he has participated in eight long-distance Worldloppet Ski Federation cross-country skiing races in various European countries, including Austria, Estonia, Finland, Italy, Norway, and Switzerland.

Looking ahead, Kornell plans to continue his skiing pursuits by participating in at least three more Worldloppet races in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Iceland in 2024. Upon completing his 10th race, he will achieve the prestigious status of Worldloppet Master.

It is evident that Kornell’s retirement in Sault Ste. Marie has been fulfilling and rewarding.
